Anton Roe, CEO at MHR, said:
“Ambition is being stifled for young people as just shy of one million 16-24 year olds have been classed as NEET from October to December 2024. The figures show that 13.4% of people aged 16 to 24 years in the UK were NEET in this quarter, an increase of 110,000 on the year.
“The government is grappling with a skills crisis across the UK as it announces plans to create an extra 20,000 government-funded work placements. But – with the right support from the government – the responsibility for tackling economic inactivity also rests with industry.
“Business leaders must diversify and open doors to access the workplace - relying less on traditional degrees, and instead placing greater importance on routes such as apprenticeships and internships. It’s how I started my career and in part the reason for the CEO position I hold today.”
