MHR unveils new tech hub in Newcastle to expand its regional focus and drive AI innovation

MHR, the specialist in HR, payroll and finance software headquartered in Nottingham, has announced the opening of its second UK office in Newcastle upon Tyne, as part of its ambitious growth strategy to deepen its footprint across the UK through continued investment in key regions
The new site at Rotterdam House, Quayside, will serve as a technology hub anchoring MHR’s software development teams under Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Watson, focused on driving innovation in AI to ensure it is used as a tool to empower workforces.
MHR, whose technology pays over 2.8 million people regularly around the world, selected Newcastle for its rich tech ecosystem, along with the talent and infrastructure needed to support MHR’s growing software ambitions. Having become one of the UK’s most sought-after tech hubs and with proximity to two world-class universities and the National Innovation Centre for Data housed in The Catalyst at Newcastle Helix, MHR will be looking to partner with the vibrant technology ecosystem in the North East.
This investment highlights MHR’s commitment to driving local economic growth while ensuring the new hub is staffed by experts capable of empowering MHR’s customers.
“MHR’s expansion into Newcastle marks an important milestone in our strategy to bring the high performing tech talent together, wherever they are,” said Anton Roe, Chief Executive Officer of MHR. “By establishing a dedicated tech hub outside Nottingham, we strengthen our commitment to innovation, regional growth and collaboration across the UK. For over 40 years we’ve led through transformation and innovation. Our move into Newcastle, the UK’s tech powerhouse, marks the start of an exciting new chapter for MHR.”
By expanding its software development teams, MHR will be able to deliver more innovative features and product enhancements. The investment in a dedicated tech hub means customers will benefit from continual improvements across People and Finance platforms, helping them to manage their HR, finance and payroll more efficiently and adapt swiftly to changing business.
Andrew Watson, Chief Technology Officer at MHR said, “Newcastle is home to a strong tech community and a skilled workforce, making it the perfect place for our new hub. By expanding our software teams here, we’ll be closer to the region’s universities, startups and innovation centres, collaborating with the wider Newcastle tech ecosystem to accelerate product development. Most importantly, this proximity means local organisations and customers will directly feel the benefits of our investment through faster delivery of smarter HR and finance solutions and tailored local support.”
This move highlights MHR’s belief that innovation flourishes when people can collaborate in person, and demonstrates the company’s resolve to go where talent thrives rather than confining all operations to a single location.
