Our story

Founded in the UK in 1984, MHR has always built technology to help organisations work better. From our early payroll and HR systems to today’s AI-powered People First platform, we have continued to develop our own technology as the needs of work have changed.

Our independence gives us the freedom to take a long-term view. We invest in the products, people and relationships that help our customers make better decisions today and prepare for what comes next.

Our timeline

1984

John Mills founds Midland Software Ltd, a business aiming to provide the best in payroll and HR technology.

1985

The Delphi product is launched.

1991

The company moves to a new HQ in Ruddington Hall in Nottinghamshire. The area remains our home to this day.

1996

The first Trent product was developed.

2003

Midland Software purchased the Britannia House site.

2006

Midland Software rebrands to become MidlandHR.

2009

iTrent was developed.

2016

MidlandHR now becomes MHR Global to reflect the global reach of our expertise.

2017

People First product launched.

2018

MHR offers an industry-first automated payroll service.

2020

Renovations to MHR headquarters totalling more than £7 million are completed, providing our staff with everything they need to excel.

2021

Jessica Mills, John's daughter, is appointed Chairman of MHR, ensuring our status as an independent family-run business for generations to come.

2021

People First is revamped, making it an employee-centric platform that is entirely cloud-hosted and built with a mobile-first design.

2021

MHR International is the only organisation to currently hold a Royal Warrant for Supply of Payroll and HR Systems.

2022

People-First real-time payroll is launched.

2023

Mere Campus, Mere Way opened - MHR's new HQ.

2023

MHR wins CIPP Product of the Year.

2024

MHR earns recognition as one of the UK's Best Places to Work from The Sunday Times.

2024

MHR Group Chairman, John Mills, was granted a Royal Warrant of Appointment from His Majesty King Charles III for the supply of Payroll and HR systems.

2025

MHR is once again named one of the UK's Best Places to Work.

2026

MHR secures its third consecutive Best Places to Work recognition from The Sunday Times.

2026

MHR hosts its inaugural World of Work event, bringing together over 1,000 delegates across HR, Payroll, and Finance.

MHR announces an AI-powered People First, turning it into a platform that unifies people, finance and intelligence.
